One of the meaningful ways we build community at our Christian school is through our Big Buddy program—a simple yet powerful practice that brings students of different ages together to learn, serve, and grow in love.

One year, our Kindergarten class explored the theme “I am a Child of God.” From the very beginning of the school year, students learned what it means to be deeply loved by God and how that love calls us to care for others. This theme shaped not only classroom learning, but also how students interact with those around them—especially their big buddies.

Reflecting God’s Love in Action

As part of our Teaching for Transformation framework, classrooms use “throughlines” to guide learning and faith formation. One of the throughlines the Kindergarten class has been focusing on this year is being image reflectors—learning how to reflect God’s love through words and actions.

When students were asked how they could show God’s love, many of their ideas centered around their big buddies. Spending time together, helping one another, creating gifts, and simply being present became tangible ways for students to live out what they were learning about God’s love.

Through the Big Buddy program, Kindergarten students are paired with older students, forming relationships that go beyond their own classroom walls. These connections give younger students a sense of belonging and security, while older students have the opportunity to lead, serve, and model kindness.

Learning Together Through Shared Experiences

Big buddy time has been filled with meaningful activities. Kindergarten students practiced writing and tracing their big buddies’ names, strengthening both literacy skills and personal connection. They created crafts together, read books, played games, and even visited the pumpkin patch side by side.

The class also interviewed their big buddies, learning fun facts and sharing what they discovered with their classmates. These moments sparked curiosity, conversation, and laughter—while helping students see one another as unique individuals created by God.

Kindergarten students worked together to assemble Valentine’s goodie bags for their buddies. Each bag was packed with treats and a personalized note, and the excitement of delivering them was evident. These small acts of service became meaningful expressions of love and gratitude.

Sharing Love With the Whole School

The impact of the Big Buddy program reached beyond these shared activities. The Kindergarten class had the opportunity to share during chapel about what they love most about their buddies and how God calls us to love others. Using the parable of the Good Samaritan, students reminded the school community that loving others means caring for those around us, just as God loves us.

This message connected beautifully with the Kindergarten Bible verse for the year:
“Let us love one another, for love is from God.” (1 John 4:7–8)

Through their words and actions, the Kindergarten students showed that faith is not only something we learn—it is something we live.

Building Community, One Relationship at a Time

The Big Buddy program has been a joy for students of all ages. Kindergarten students have loved getting to know their buddies, serving them, and finding new ways to express care and kindness. Older students have embraced their role as mentors and friends, growing in responsibility and compassion.

These relationships help build a strong, Christ-centered community where students learn that they belong to one another. By connecting across grade levels, students develop empathy, confidence, and a deeper understanding of what it means to reflect God’s love in everyday life.

At our Christian school, Big Buddy time is more than a scheduled activity—it is a living example of our commitment to faith, fellowship, and community. Through shared moments, simple acts of service, and genuine relationships, God’s love is being reflected in big ways—one buddy at a time.
