At Timothy Christian School, learning a second language is about more than vocabulary and grammar—it’s about communication, confidence, and connection. Our Extended French program in Grades 5 and 6 reflects this belief by offering students a rich, immersive language experience that supports both academic growth and personal development, all within a Christ-centered learning environment.
For many students, Extended French becomes a rewarding and transformative parts of their school experience.
What Is Extended French?
Extended French is exactly what it sounds like: extended time learning French each day. At TCS, students in Grades 5 and 6 participate in longer French language blocks—up to 100 minutes per day, allowing them to spend sustained time listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French.
This approach differs from Core French, which is typically woven into the school week in shorter periods and offers limited opportunity for extended conversation and immersion. It also differs from French Immersion, which often places students into a French environment for half the school day and integrates additional subjects in French—an approach that may not be accessible or suitable for all learners.
Our Extended French program strikes a thoughtful balance. It provides depth and consistency without overwhelming students, making it accessible to nearly all learners at TCS. This model has proven to be highly effective, helping students grow steadily in both skill and confidence.
A Typical Morning in the Extended French Classroom
Each day in the Extended French classroom begins with worship in English, grounding students in faith and setting the tone for learning. From there, students gather in a circle, where they greet one another with a handshake—in French—building community and practicing real-life language skills right away.
Next comes the Message du Jour, a central part of the program. The teacher writes a short message in French—often connected to school life, current events, or history—and reads it aloud with the students. Together, they discuss the message, ask questions, and look closely at grammar and writing patterns within a meaningful context.
Students then engage in short activities that reinforce foundational skills such as numbers, prepositions, and sentence structure. These routines help build fluency and confidence through repetition and application.
Prayer and reflection follow, with students given the choice to pray in French or English—a simple but powerful reminder that faith touches every part of life, including language learning.
The morning continues with “mini prof,” where students take turns leading oral questions about the date, weather, and daily topics. This daily speaking practice gives students consistent, low-pressure opportunities to communicate aloud.
Finally, students return to their desks to write the Message du Jour in their journals, reinforcing reading, writing, and comprehension all at once.
Learning That Builds Naturally
The Extended French program is intentionally structured around how language is best acquired—through meaningful use. Learning revolves around speaking, reading, writing, and then more speaking. Each skill builds on the previous one so students feel supported and successful.
Grade 5 and 6 students have different learning targets and units of study. Grade 5 students are currently studying la famille, while Grade 6 students are focusing on les sports. Themes are drawn from everyday life—family, pets, sports, nutrition, animals—topics students can easily relate to and talk about.
As students move into senior grades, themes become more complex, encouraging them to reflect, share opinions, and give reasons—all in French.
Student Growth and Confidence
One of the clearest indicators of the program’s success is student voice.
Grade 5 students shared:
- “I am proud to speak French.”
- “I’m still a bit nervous but I like French a bit more every day.”
- “I have noticed that I have been speaking more in French.”
Grade 6 students reflected:
- “I was able to speak in more advanced levels.”
- “I really like mini prof and journaling.”
- “I am proud of my sport research in French.”
- “J’aime le français beaucoup.”
Over time, students move from speaking only about familiar classroom topics to carrying on conversations about books, hobbies, weekends, and everyday life—sometimes without even realizing they’ve switched languages.
One student reflected:
“Sometimes, there are even times where I don’t realize I am reading the French side of things.”
Purpose, Engagement, and Real Communication
Extended French helps students see why learning a second language matters. Communication is the goal, and when students experience real conversations, motivation grows.
Regular visits and assessments with French consultant M. André Charlebois help students track progress and stretch their abilities. Speaking with a native French speaker builds confidence and reinforces that students are truly communicating—not just completing assignments.
One student shared:
“Being able to speak to a native French speaker who knows what level of French we are at is really encouraging.”
Projects like Mon Zoo Virtuel, where students created narrated videos in French, challenged them to refine pronunciation, writing, and clarity. Looking back, students recognize how much they grew through these authentic learning experiences.
Integrating Faith and Learning
At Timothy Christian School, faith is never separate from learning—and Extended French is no exception. Students are encouraged to see that language is a gift, opening doors to understanding culture, history, and people more deeply.
Learning French also invites reflection on Canada’s bilingual identity and cultural diversity. By listening, learning, and communicating, students practice empathy and respect—key parts of living out Christ’s call to love others.
As students grow in language, they also grow in awareness that faith shapes how we interact with the world. Learning another language becomes a way to reflect Christ’s love through communication, curiosity, and understanding.
A Strong Foundation for the Future
Extended French at TCS equips students with more than language skills. It builds confidence, perseverance, cultural awareness, and communication—skills that serve students well far beyond the classroom.
By providing extended time, meaningful conversation, and faith-filled learning, the program helps students experience success and joy in language learning. Students don’t just learn French—they begin to live it.
We are grateful for the dedication of our Extended French teacher, the enthusiasm of our students, and the way this program continues to grow confident communicators who are prepared to use their gifts in service to God and others.
